Valentine's Day writing activities for upper elementary. A photo of a gray mouse clip art on top of an envelope with a heart seal and lined writing paper with a pencil

Valentine’s Day writing activities are always a highlight of February! Alongside Valentine’s Day, our school also celebrates Respect for All Week, a time when we focus on kindness, friendship, empathy, and the ways we care for one another. It’s a natural opportunity to bring those themes into Writing Workshop with activities that are purposeful, fun, and creative for upper elementary writers.

Personal Narrative Writing Prompts for Valentine’s Day

For students who enjoy sharing stories about themselves and their experiences, February is an ideal time to work through personal narratives, whether paragraph-length or longer.

Here are some creative prompts to get students started:

  • A memorable moment of kindness
  • A time you helped a friend
  • A story about a friendship challenge and how it was solved
  • A time when you “put yourself in someone else’s shoes” and understood how they felt
  • A Valentine’s Day surprise for someone you care about

Similarly, these prompts connect naturally to Respect for All Week themes, such as friendship, empathy, and community, while giving students room to stretch their writing creativity.

Valentine’s Day Writing Craftivities for Upper Elementary

Craftivities are one of my favorite ways to help students publish their writing in a way that feels special! Having a few Valentine’s Day writing activities and craftivities ready to go makes February feel a lot more manageable. Students love having something hands-on and artsy to pair with their writing, and these simple projects give them a sense of ownership and pride in their work.

For students who love to draw, there’s always the option to create their own art topper, cut it out, and glue it to the top of their published piece. Alternatively, for students who prefer coloring and decorating pre-printed art instead, there are various options for student choice.

1 – Valentine’s Day Kids & Critters Writing Craft

This one is especially relatable for students. The kid‑themed toppers make the writing feel personal, and the animal toppers are always a hit. If you have students who light up at anything cute or character-based, this option will pull them right in.

2 – Valentine’s Day Hearts Writing Craft

These are awesome for a traditional or vintage Valentine’s Day feel. Lots of hearts from which to choose, so have fun mixing and matching styles! Great for bulletin board displays, too!

3 – Valentine’s Day Heart Frame Writing Craft

This is excellent for hallway displays. The heart frames make student writing look polished and intentional without adding extra prep on the teacher’s part. Students can write inside the frames for a more personalized touch.

4 – Valentine’s Day Flowers Writing Craft

This one pairs beautifully with poetry or reflective writing. It gives students a chance to create something meaningful they’re proud to bring home.

All four craftivities include the same core supports: narrative, personal narrative, opinion, and poetry task cards; differentiated writing pages; pre-printed art toppers; and student directions. The consistency makes it simple to plug them into writing centers, partner work, or a Friday publishing celebration without needing to reinvent the wheel.

Hands-On Valentine’s Crafts for the Classroom

Alongside structured craftivities, I like having a bin of simple crafting materials that students can use to create Valentine’s cards or collages. These can be used to decorate published writing or as an art extension activity.

A few easy supplies are all you need:

  • Red, pink, and purple construction paper
  • Round and heart-shaped paper doilies for a vintage feel
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks or liquid glue
  • Markers or Kwik Stix
  • Anything extra you’d like to include (my students love using ABC stencils for lettering)

Students can decorate cards for family members, caregivers, or friends, or create collages to accompany their writing. In effect, it’s low-prep, a little messy in an engaging way, and gives students a chance to work with crafty materials while building fine motor skills.

Bringing It All Together

February may be short, but it’s full of opportunities to build writing stamina, celebrate kindness and friendship, and help students express themselves through seasonal writing. Whether you choose Valentine’s Day narrative writing prompts, Valentine’s Day opinion writing prompts, poetry, or a hands-on Valentine’s Day kids writing craft, these activities make writing meaningful and fun.
